The History Of Tennis Rackets

by Tom Doerr

The history of tennis rackets goes back for centuries. Originally the game was played by hitting the ball with one's hands. Players quickly decided that this was rather painful and began searching for other methods to use. The racket that we see today was finally created some time in the fourteenth century made from a wooden frame and gut bound together.

From the first introduction and over many years until new materials were put to use as the handle and frame, the racket changed very little. Slight improvements were made to the process used to create the frame and head while the webbing was left unchanged for several years. The original clubs were much smaller than those we easily recognize today.

Because the clubs were heavy and had a much smaller head, the players used a rather dead style ball which did not bounce like the modern balls used today. However by the point in time when the racket was improved, the game was generally played over a net.

Eventually the webbing portion was fashioned from the nylon strands of today rather than using the animal gut but few records are available as to when this change actually occurred. Even today some players still prefer wooden handles over the stronger aluminum or graphite that is available.

Various types of materials have been used for the production of the heads. Graphite become a popular material for use as it was proven to be much stronger than aluminum. Aluminum was a good material however hard hits tend to cause bends in the shape which created unpredictable results for the shot.

The shape, size and materials of the racket has changed dramatically since it was first used. While the club head was smaller in the beginning, it was determined that a larger sized head used today would create a more powerful and stronger racket as we see today.
