High School Sports Are Never Dull

by Rosie Tanner

Although, or indeed in the opinion of some because of the lack of big money investment when compared with the major leagues, high school sports have long held a unique place in the American consciousness as the young athletes of the future compete non-professionally for the glory of their institute rather than just for money. We can see many of tomorrows stars before they are famous.

Soccer has long been one of the staples of the high school sports season. Although it's popularity at this level has not translated into the adult level in the same way that the sport remains the national game of most of South America and Europe and much of the world, this could all change and right now you could see the next Lionel Messi or David Beckham before he is discovered.

Baseball is for many the ultimate American sport, the moments of tension and do or die make for a perfect afternoons viewing and even at high school level many of the athletes are impressive to say the least. Relive those fond memories of the school baseball team by keeping up with the latest future stars of the major leagues while they are still promising young students.

Probably the most popular sport in the whole country, football, gridiron, pigskin or however you wish to call it has entranced America from professional and college to students at senior and junior level for generations. The high school game has won a great many fans recently with the increasing use of trick plays to bamboozle opposition defenses capturing the imagination of fans nothing to do with the teams or even the sport itself.

Running is also a surprisingly exciting sport to watch at this level with some truly incredible athletes lining up every season to fight it out and see once and for all who is the fastest. Of course US running academies have produced a long line of gold medalists and world record breakers at tournament and Olympic level and is not to be sniffed at by any means.

In the north of the country Ice Hockey has long been one of the popular sports and the high school version likewise. With much of the fighting and contact dealt with much more harshly than the turning a blind eye that we often see at the adult level, the game is a much more skillful and exciting spectacle for local teams rather than the behemoths the pro game has created.

The age restrictions applied to these sports often adds to rather than takes away from their appeal, the fact that they are high school students rather than professional athletes often provides a very different set of motivations for the players.

In summary high school sports offer sometimes more exciting and unpredictable contests than those on show in the professional arena. The fact that the sportsmen are representing their area rather than a company adds to the excitement immensely. Even for sports fans with no interest in the teams it often provides thrilling contests.
