by Carl Hartley

Sometimes ping pong is called table tennis. Whatever you call the game to play ping pong is a great source of fun and exercise. Cheap ping pong tables are easy to find, and you don't need a lot of space to use one. There are some rules to the game, which differ somewhat depending on if the game is played as recreation or professionally.

The game can be played by two or four players. If you have no experience, it is probably best to start with just two people playing. It is also a good idea to practice with another novice, or alternatively, a good player with the patience and the desire to teach. For those who want get the feel of the paddle, it's possible to practice alone by hitting the ball against a garage door or blank wall.

The person elected to serve starts the game by tossing the ball up in the air with one hand, allowing the ball to bounce on their side of the table and then hitting it with the paddle to the other side of the table. Similar to tennis, there is a volley back and forth between players until one player fails to return the volley. When this happens, the other player gets the point.

The ball is only allowed to bounce once on your side of the table before the volley is returned to the other side. It is best to practice volleying back and forth just to get adept at hitting the ball with the desired force and direction. After both players gain a little expertise, they can attempt to hit shots that will be difficult for the opposing play to return. However, in order to avoid frustration, acquiring the skill of volleying first is more productive than trying to beat your opponent. There will be plenty of time for that later.

The rules of the game are fairly simple. When the server hits the ball into the net or misses the table completely, the point goes to his opponent. The player receiving the ball can only hit the ball once after is bounces on your side of the table. If you hit it two times in one volley, your opponent gets the point.

When played professionally, the volley will continue until eleven combined points have been scored. Every two points the server is alternated to provide a balance if one player's serve is stronger. When playing just for the fun of it, people will often play until fifteen or twenty-one scored points.

The rules of the game state that you must win two out of three games to be declared the winner. Unless you win two games in a row, negating a need for a tie breaking game. Those who enjoy the game for fun frequently just play until they get tired.

There are cheap ping pong tables easy to order online or at any sporting goods store. Experience and skill makes the game more active and more fun for players and spectators alike.
