Can A Bellevue Chiropractor Help A Cyclist?

by Dr. Michael Weir

A burning in the shoulders, numbness in the arms and hands, and tightness in the neck are very common sensations for cyclists. Sometimes you can ignore these type of symptoms, but if they keep coming back it usually starts to interfere with your cycling. Upper and lower back problems are a common consequence of regular cycling. The question is can a chiropractor help a cyclist with these type of problems?

The answer is absolutely! In addition, chiropractors can help prevent injuries, enhance speed, strength, and even efficiency for healthy cyclists. Athletes of all kinds and ages can find help with rehabilitation, maintenance, prevention, and treatment in the hands of a chiropractor.

Chiropractors have a unique set of skills and knowledge to offer a cyclists, in addition to their general musculoskeletal expertise. Everything in cycling is interconnected: the nerves, the muscles, and the joints. In fact, if your physician or chiropractor isn't addressing all three of these issues at once, you are likely to continue to have the symptoms, pain, or injury without any relief. As a chiropractor in Bellevue I have the distinct opportunity to work with adjunct professionals such as sports trainers or physical therapists as needed to address your particular needs.

Solutions to problems that most cyclists experience usually requires a multi-dimensional treatment regimen. That is, a combination of chiropractic adjustments, deep tissue massage, specific exercises, and stretches will likely be required. For example, if a cyclist is suffering from lower back pain, it's possible that I would determine that it is due to pelvic misplacement. An adjustment of the sacroiliac joints will be extremely helpful in this case, but appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises will also be needed to address the weakness and tightness in the muscles that affect the pelvis and hip joints. Strengthening exercises will contribute stability to the joint, while stretching will help to lengthen the muscles in the region thus preventing them from contracting when stressed.

With exercises and stretching being a huge part of the healing process it is important that you play a large part in the rehab plan. I can help bring proper alignment back to the joints, but if there is nothing there to hold them there they will go right back, and you will not see the results you are looking for.

Finally, it is important that we help you professionally fit your bicycle so that it causes the least strain on your body. Is the seat in the right place? Is it the right size? Are the handlebars properly fit? All of these play a huge part in reducing strain and preventing injury's while you cycle. I have referrals here in the Bellevue and Seattle area that can perform this service for you.
